Some woman protest the phrase ‘cougar’. They find it derogatory and question why older men, who date young women do not get a similar name. Personally I believe cougar is the ultimate compliment. These great cats are powerful, successful hunters, beautiful and graceful. Perhaps they are the ultimate metaphor for a modern day successful and mature woman. The term cougar woman has become mainstream and has been brought to our attention as more celebrities jump on the bandwagon, but the fact is men who date younger women do get noticed and labeled.
They may be referred to as cradle snatchers, sugar daddies, dirty old men or even, God forbid, perverts. They are also accused of having a mid-life crisis. To be called a cougar woman, refers to none of those negative stereotypes . The fact is that a woman who dates a younger man is at her sexual peak and her relationship with the younger man is just another aspect of her successful life.
The thing people need to realize (including the media) is that all cougar women are not the same. Some may be predatory, others less so. Some may dress provocatively and others may prefer a more demure look and of course every cougar woman has a different personality. Part of the cougar woman’s appeal is her individuality and self assurance. Women who call themselves cougars are removing a taboo that has long been held over women who date younger men.
So older women, embrace the term, cougar, because when you think about it, there is nothing more flattering.
